My Students

Even though I may only see them once or sometimes twice a week, I love teaching my students music because I get to see every student in the school and have the opportunity of sharing one of my favorite things with them.

My students are eager to take in new concepts every time I see them - new songs, new listening selections, new instruments, new musicians, new singing games, the list continues.

Though each grade is different in age, knowledge, and behavior, I am amazed at the constant trait seen in my preschool students through my fifth grade students. Their enthusiasm for life and curiosity to learn keeps my colleagues and I going. Each of my students succeeds in various ways and I truly think this is because they are surrounded by mentors and teachers who deeply care about their successes and their progress.

My Project

Having recently picked up the ukulele for the first time myself, the students will discover the excitement of learning quite a difficult new instrument. With a small group size, the students will have the opportunity of learning as a team on their own differentiated levels starting from scratch with me as their guide. I look forward to teaching my students the background of the ukulele, how to care for the instrument, and introducing them to artists who play the instrument. Like the guitar, it is a very versatile instrument and after learning a few chords, one can accompany their own singing or play a song. The students will be able to accompany classmates after school and during music, will have performing opportunities, and will understand the excitement and the feeling of success after learning and mastering new skills.

I have had various students ask me if we could ever do guitar lessons or lessons of the like.

With this project, I hope to add another experience to what I already teach in my music classroom. Learning a new instrument as well as learning new music concepts help children in other aspects of learning and life, including improving reading and math skills, and even boosting self-esteem. I know my students would be ecstatic if this project became a reality.
