This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever spent an entire orchestra rehearsal constantly readjusting your cello or bass endpin because it keeps slipping? My students are suffering from this problem because the endpins that support the instrument are old and need to be replaced so that they can be played properly.

My students are from a suburban school.

Many of them are entitled to free or reduced lunch. Their enthusiasm inspires and motivates me to teach them as much as I can during my time with them. The orchestra students work very hard and take the time to prepare their music and are all active participants in rehearsal. The frustration that I see in their eyes when their instruments keep slipping is saddening because they need to stop what they are doing, bend and readjust the endpin to the proper height, and then continue playing from where they left off. Despite some of the technical hardships faced, my students love to play anyway and the constant readjustment is just another part of rehearsal for them.

My Project

Overall cello and bass supplies lack. We are in the process of building our orchestra program and the lower strings (cellos and basses in particular) are essential for a balanced orchestra. Student motivation and interest in playing these instruments are there, but playable cellos and basses are not at the moment. Receiving these materials would make a world of difference because I am able to do the repairs and make these instruments playable. Not only would more students be able to study the cello and/or bass, but the current students would have new excitement about their newly repaired instrument! This will benefit the cellists and bassists because their instrument playing position will be improved and able to be perfected. Each student currently compensates in some way to make their instrument play (i.e. balancing it on the inside of their legs), but they won't have to anymore because the instrument part that is supposed to be doing that for them will be doing that for them

Again, I ask for your support on behalf of my orchestra students and the community.

Some students don't excel in the demanding academics but they strive in orchestra. Their desire to have instrumental music in their lives is here, please help us to bring it to even more students and improve the current situation for the current students by assisting in the repair and maintenance of our instruments.
