This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second graders are curious, global learners who study in both English and Spanish in our dual language program. Located in a poor, urban neighborhood, many of the students will never travel outside the city to experience life beyond their small sphere.

At my school, we strive to bring the students meaningful, hands-on learning experiences to build their background knowledge.

The school is a safe space where they can take academic and social risks in order to broaden their understanding of the world.

My Project

Students who struggle with math need lots of hands-on and visual experiences with numbers. The Tiny Polka Dot deck has six different number representations and more than a dozen games of different levels students can play in centers. I want to be able to have enough sets for each learning pod of students to use, so I am requesting six. The clothespins are for a number line activity where students clip numbers on a string line. This helps them understand order and estimate number location, and even add and subtract.

It's hard for students to conceptualize something invisible like sound waves.

A metal slinky is a great tool for students to understand how sound moves through air, and it's also useful in other fun, engaging sound explorations. There are also many sound experiences that use a tuning fork, which I've never had available. A tuning fork touched to a bowl of water can show students how sound travels through water, not just air.
