My students need more opportunities to explore, and be successful, with familiar awarding-winning authors.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Rhodes's classroom raised $431

My Students
This year I'll be looping with my students to 5th grade after being with them in 4th. I teach 2 blocks of reading and writing. My classroom is filled with a diverse student population. Ethnicities are numerous and poverty is high.
However, the kids don't see these statistics nor do they care, which is just how I like it.
We come together from all walks of life to LEARN! We enrich each other's lives just by being ourselves. We read about friendship, adventure, love, and even pain. We write about our experiences and emotions. We devour words and spill them out again.
My Project
As a teacher, you have to know when to pounce! Each time I finish a ‘mentor’ text, students are hungry for more. They would tackle each other (if I let them) for a chance to reach for the next book in a series or a second book by an author. When you observe students, lunging and racing for a book you know you have started something great.
However, it is a gigantic disappointment when you have to tell a room of 28 kids that there is only 1 copy available.
This project seeks to provide more readily available texts from familiar authors in hopes of feeding the frenzy of my ravenous readers. This is my second ‘looping’ year to have these fabulous students. I have read aloud each of the authors in this project to my class. We most recently finished book one in A Series of Unfortunate Events and they loved it. It is so rewarding to see them returning from the school library with books in the series. It means I have sparked an interest (which is every teacher’s goal) in reading.
However, it pains me to know there are only a limited amount of books in our small school library and that over 100 kids in 5th grade are searching for the same thing. This project would provide 50 students with a copy of a familiar author. This familiarity is not only exciting, but also academically beneficial. Reading books by the same author, or in a series, helps developing readers. It stretches their reading ‘muscles’ without pulling too hard. Once finished with a text, they’ll return it to the shelf and grab another one! Once this project is complete, reluctant readers will be nowhere in sight!
