This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Crash! Bang! Ding! Boom! There are so many percussion sounds to hear and infinite ways to combine them into rhythm patterns and full-length compositions. In this music classroom, my students are so ready to create and yet we have so few actual instruments for them to use.

My students are almost 100% African, African-American, or Hispanic.

Many of their parents are recent immigrants. It is important for my students to connect with their own cultures through the performance of music. However, my school is in a very underserved community. Many parents struggle just to feed and clothe their children. Despite their socio-economic disadvantages, though, my students are motivated to learn and they are eager to play any instrument they are given. As with many schools around the country, funding is difficult for us. Our school is a relatively new charter school, so we do not have a lot of room in the budget to provide enough instruments for a full class of students. Because of this, my students have become extremely conscientious about taking turns, but it would mean so much for them each to have something in their hand to create and compose simultaneously.

My Project

With a full class set of percussion instruments, we will have enough instruments for each child to play at the same time in our own "rhythm band." We will begin by classifying the instruments by the type of sound it makes. We will then separate into these small groups to create rhythms specific to each group. Students will write their rhythms down together. The class will begin to make a full-length composition by deciding which groups should play together, how long the entire piece should be, and appropriate dynamics. Each group will create a "score" for the conductor to follow. The students will then choose one leader to be their conductor. The conductor will choose his/her favorite "score" and use the music stand and the baton to conduct the arrangement. The two extra stands will be for resting the smallest percussion instruments at our assembly performance.

This project will achieve several musical objectives: reinforcing beat competency, familiarity with meter, reading and notating music, and identification of dynamics.

It will also facilitate group work skills. As the one music teacher for the entire school, I can do this lesson with all of my classes. Your donation will provide musical enrichment for 250 eager young musicians.
