Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our music room is a safe and fun place where my students make music together. They walk into the room, I grab my ukulele, and we sing hello to each other. Despite challenges they might have, I want my students to find comfort in music.
I teach every class in our school from Pre-Kindergarten to 5th grade, nearly a total of 500 students, at a Title I elementary school in Washington Heights in Manhattan, New York City.
Many of my students come from a Hispanic background. For most of them, our music class is the only opportunity for their music lessons. Therefore, I want to make our time together as meaningful as possible.
Our school maintains relatively small class sizes, and that enables teachers to give more tailored instruction, but this is a factor which contributes to a tight budget. In addition, a lot of students come from low-income families. Nevertheless, I am determined to do my best not to let those factors stand in the way of my students getting the resources they deserve. I hope to provide them with the right tools and opportunities through the support here at DonorsChoose.org.
My Project
Starting this year, I am using a world music curriculum called "Musical Explorers" in partnership with Carnegie Hall. I have seen overwhelmingly positive responses from my students. I believe that I am opening a door to allow more diversity in music and sending a positive message of inclusion. So far, for this academic year, I learned and taught my students music from several different cultures, including Greek folk music, Malian traditional music, Indian classical music, and jazz music from the U.S.
Now, I am learning myself and teaching bomba and plena music from Puerto Rico, and I would love to have some of the simple yet fun percussion instruments like a güiro and a guicharo to play during lessons.
In addition, for this project, I am also requesting some drumsticks that my students are going to use with buckets that I have been collecting through my friend who is a restaurant owner. I am also requesting sturdy bamboo chopsticks because I have been advised by other music teachers to use them prior to handing over actual drumsticks! I have performed bucket drumming with students at my previous school before, and it was so much fun and educational since we can just focus on rhythm!
During my first year at my current school, I put singing and fun music games as a focal point of my lessons. Now that I am going through the second year, I have been working to organize the space and use more instruments. I have no doubt that having these Latin percussions like a güiro and a guicharo will boost the students' learning, especially considering the fact that many of my students come from Hispanic backgrounds, including some from Puerto Rico. I am grateful for the opportunities here, and I would love your support. Thank you!
