This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my community are motivated to learn by innovation and critical thinking. They come from low socio-economic backgrounds and therefore have minimal resources and opportunities at home. The classroom, the school, and the community are all places for them to explore and excel. With the nearby park/recreation center, involvement from the local police department, and several community led activities on the school campus, the students and their families are exposed to various windows of opportunity to flourish and thrive.
My Project
One area my students struggle the most with is listening and speaking. I'm requesting a camera and a portable speaker so that I can set up a listening and singing station, as well as an "express yourself" station. At the listening and singing station, students will be able to listen to stories and songs and repeat them to boost their listening and speaking confidence. The express ourself station will allow them to create a scene, take and print pictures, and later write a descriptive narrative about the scene.
In my classroom, we practice listening and speaking daily using cooperative learning strategies.
The addition of technology would give my students a much needed boost of practice in the areas of listening & speaking, creative expression, and writing. Students who are confident in their listening and speaking abilities will be ready to face the challenges of higher education and the workplace.
