Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach the seventh grade honors literature class in the poorest Congressional district in the country, in a school filled with some of the most heartbreakingly inspiring children in the world. Nearly 92% of my students qualify for free lunch and all of them are in need of as much extra support and help as they can get.
As honors students, my students often encounter words that they don't know or aren't sure of. In fact, many of my students have just discovered that they are considered "talented" in the world of literature and English. While all of my students are indeed quite gifted, many of them still struggle with a vocabulary that has yet to be developed. As I want to continue to push my students into reading more and more difficult texts, it becomes extremely essential that they have a dictionary to refer to at all times.
I need 25 copies of Webster's Dictionary and Thesaurus. My students thrive in the world of language and communication. With technology at such a rise, it becomes even more essential for my students to know the meaning of words, the preciousness of your voice, and the miracle it is to be able to speak. My students will be reading very difficult texts, and I believe that they can truly be successful in reading these texts with just a little bit of help.
With your generous donations, you will be able to inflame my students into a love of reading and, most importantly, a love of books. As students facing so many obstacles, limitations, and injustices, it becomes even more important for them to learn the power of words. My students are particularly remarkable little minds, spirits, and hearts and I have no doubt that they will learn to develop their vocabulary and thoughts into speeches and ideas that ring across the country.
