Help me give my students opportunities to stretch learning beyond the classroom with discovery backpacks with several different high and low tech activities for learning through play and discovery.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am the librarian at Madison, a K-5 Dual Language school. No matter their home language, all of our students read, write and speak both English and Spanish. Our community is both linguistically and culturally diverse which is one of the many things that I love about working at Madison.
My Project
This project contains several different STEM activities for our diverse student population. While the items in the list are diverse, the focus is equitable access to STEM related materials for all students.
I want to create opportunities to stretch student learning beyond the walls of the building and including our families in the process.
Not all students have equitable access to supports and learning materials at home. What if we were to minimize the barriers that are preventing students from these learning opportunities? This project is to A) Provide high tech items to reinforce coding skills learned at school and B) Provide home packs for students to check out from the library in order to reinforce the skills that they learned at school.
There are 25 clear backpacks on the list. The packs will be managed within our library. Some packs will be back yard explorers with bug books, microscopes and magnifying glasses or plant books and seeds. Other packs will have robots and books that support coding or art materials that reinforce making and engineering. And still other kits will have a camera and a green screen kit. I have been teaching green screen skills to our students in grade 3-5 for two years and always struggle with the limitations of numbers of hours in the school day and the limited number of cameras within the school. This will allow the students to take their WeVideo green screen skills beyond the walls of the library. Students will be able to check out a camera and a green screen, take raw images and videos and then bring them back to the library for processing on our chrome books. I am so excited for the potential of making all of these opportunities available to all students!
