Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all bilingual and most are of a Latino background. They live predominantly in high-crime, low-income neighborhoods, and nearly 90% qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Most of my students are immigrants or the children of immigrants. Our school is located in South Minneapolis, MN. Our neighborhoods have been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and by the recent social unrest. Many of my students, who were already food insecure, now find themselves living in a food desert as our two local grocery stores and several restaurants have been destroyed by fires.

My students have many hardships, yet they take on challenges with hope and perseverance.

They have many responsibilities in addition to their education. These responsibilities often include taking care of themselves and their younger siblings while their parents work two or three jobs to make ends meet.

Many of my students have overcome an enormous challenge by merely making it to school every day. These challenges have been compounded by inequities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. That they can accomplish everything asked of them and still be full of joy and optimism is inspiring. They dream big, and I am lucky to know them.

My Project

My students, like all students, have had an incredibly difficult year. Now that we are back in person, the stress of this school year is manifesting in many ways. One thing that my students say helps them to focus and deal with stress is being able to use fidgets in the classroom.

I want to help my students reduce their stress.

We have given out all of the fidgets we currently have in our middle school. However, since we are still in the pandemic, the students cannot share the fidgets we have.

My 150 students would benefit from having fidget toys they can use without risking getting sick by sharing items with their peers. Please help me support my learners as we approach the end of the year by giving them objects to relieve their stress.
