Strengthening 3rd Grade Math and Problem Solving Skills
My students need these white boards and markers to help them develop math strategies to understand and master 3rd grade skills such as multiplication, fractions, and problem solving.

My Students
I'm a 3rd grade special education teacher in an Integrated Co-teaching classroom at a Title I school in NYC. Our class has a broad spectrum of students with various abilities--from kids who a reading a grade or two above level to children who are still struggling with sight words and letter sounds. From students who can solve any math problem you put in front on them to students who have difficulty with basic math facts.
While my students with learning disabilities or language disorders may struggle to read or solve word problems, their persistence and motivation is inspiring.
Each day they practice their sight words and sounds. Each day they read aloud to me and their peers to practice their reading skills. The use graphic organizers and drawings to solve word problems. And when they fail or make mistakes, they try again.
My Project
My students struggle to understand what word problems are all about. With these wipe off boards students will be able to practice using models to help they break down word problems and understand what they are trying to solve for. Students will be able to draw arrays and compare fractions more accurately using the Building Math skills board which will be especially helpful for my students with visual spatial reasoning difficulties and those with poor motor skills.
The boards will increase efficiency and reduce waste in the classroom as all students will have access to these reusable materials for repeated practice throughout the year.
The magnetic wipe board will aid teacher in small group lessons when teaching these math skills as well as in other subject areas.
