My Students
My students attend school at a Title I school, so a majority of the students come from families with low incomes. Some of them are learning English as their second language and having hands on and very visual learning experiences are best to really help them get the vocabulary and be successful as they are in the later years of elementary school.
My students are full of excitement about learning and love coming to school!
The students I work with are full of great questions and really care about doing their best. Some of them are dealing with some challenges in life, but they are all wonderful kids and a joy to work with!
My Project
I would like to get a class set of yoga balls for my students to use as chairs. One of my students needs a little wiggle mat on his chair to help him stay focused, and it also helped strengthen his core muscles and accomplish more of his school work. To other students it looked like a fun privilege and gave them the idea to ask for them for all the students. I had my class write pen pal letters to students in my sister's class about 30 minutes away and in their class they use yoga balls for chairs. This was mentioned in a few letters back and forth because her students love it and she has told me about the benefits she has seen from high achieving students, kids who struggle with paying attention, and even said she saw a noticeable difference in the reading as she transitioned her class to yoga ball chairs.
I believe these yoga balls will help my students academically and will keep them moving and toning their posture and core muscles throughout the day as they are at their desks.
I have requested a few different colors to help me have a new way to partner students up with their peers they might not typically work with throughout the day if I ask them to find a student with the same color yoga ball for some learning activity during the day.
More than half of students from low‑income households
