Street Pens: Art & Writing Contest Supplies

My students need art media and reference material to be able to draw and paint illustrations for an art contest put on by the Writers' Group on Facebook called Street Pens.

My Students

Our students are incarcerated youth who have spent very little time in any sort of typical classroom.

Something in their lives has gone horribly wrong; and now they're not only paying for it, but trying to learn something new to keep themselves from returning to the juvenile justice system.

These students are still at the early stages of the game where they haven't given up hope for the future. Thus, they see each opportunity to learn a new skill as something that could help turn their lives around.

My Project

The Writers' Group on Facebook is working with numerous community partners to produce a writing and art competition focused on the theme of what home is. The purpose is to enlighten students on the importance of having a home and to spread awareness of the issue of homelessness. It's inspired by The Writers of the Future anthologies which our participants will be able to use for reference.

The project, called Street Pens will culminate in a published anthology of written work submitted by the homeless population in the community with a student category in both written and pieces which illustrate those works.

In addition the CARE Complex of Downtown Las Vegas has offered up a wall on which the student winner of the contest may paint a mural. My students will use Scrubby Notebooks to sketch up ideas for their submissions. Scrubby Notebooks have waterproof, "dry erase" sheets so students can reuse the entire notebook again and again, submitting hundreds of ideas without going through reams of paper. The selected winners of this project will use the acrylics and brushes from BLICK Art Materials to paint their winning submissions onto the chosen walls of the CARE Complex.
