My 5th grade students are very diverse. They come from a variety of social, economic, religious, and racial backgrounds. They speak many different languages and perform on a variety of different academic ability levels. They all come to school each day with different gifts and talents, interests and issues, hopes and dreams.
Despite all the ways we are different, my students are alike in so many more ways.
They are all the leaders in our school. They are all excited about learning and they LOVE to share what they know. They are curious, ask questions, and celebrate when they are successful at learning new things. Most importantly, we work hard by using everyone's unique talents to support all of our varying needs in order to succeed. They know their teamwork is what will make their dreams work!
My Project
For this project, I am requesting books we can use to enhance and support learning across the curriculum - specifically in the areas of science, technology, reading, engineering, art, and math (STREAM). For example, The World Is Not a Rectangle: A Portrait of Architect Zaha Hadid correlates to our study of geometry and also lends itself to STREAM building projects. Magic Trash: A Story of Tyree Guyton and His Art is another beautiful story to inspire students to look at materials for projects in different, creative ways while reinforcing environmental science concepts and vocabulary.
While inspiring, these books also reflect the growing diversity our students will encounter as global citizens, model problem solving from beyond our community, and help to redefine an inclusive image of leadership.
From Katherine Johnson and Sonya Sotomayor to Tito Puente and Jacob Lawrence, the strong main characters in these books depict women and BIPOC leading in their chosen fields, following their passions, and overcoming adversity. The people represented in these stories are role models I want all my students to learn from and to be inspired by. I believe adding these titles to our class library, with simple tools like the Cardboard Construction Kit and scissors, will be the catalyst for a variety of projects during the school year, but, more importantly, impact the developing perceptions my students have about STREAM careers and who can be successful leaders in those jobs in the future.
