Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students who are struggling to read need to be motivated! Old, out-of-date books and magazines are not going to entice them to read more. They need colorful, high-interesting reading materials to get enthusiastic about reading!

I work with students in the first through fifth grades.

These students are referred to me by their classroom teachers because they are struggling to keep up with their classmates and are at risk to fall further behind. Many of the students come from homes where their parents do not speak English, which means that they need extra support in school. Because the majority of our students are low-income, they do not have a lot of books or reading materials accessible to them at home. A lot of the students that I work with suffer from low self-esteem because they know that they are not able to read at the same level as their peers.

My Project

The resources that I am requesting are colorful booklets that cover a variety of fiction and nonfiction materials that cover many topics that my students will find interesting. These booklets are written to be geared towards different reading levels so I will be able to accurately match students with reading levels that will be appropriate for them, which will in turn boost their confidence when they are able to read them independently. The resources will be used daily during the time that the students see me for 45 minutes per day. Additionally, these booklets can be sent home with students for extra practice since it is very important for them to practice reading outside of school, which is difficult since many of them do not have access to reading materials at home.

These resources will help students to gain confidence as readers.

With my guidance and support, they will learn to decode unfamiliar words and apply active reading strategies to help them understand what they are reading. As their reading improves, their confidence will build as they become proud of themselves for being able to read. The joy that they experience from being successful will help them become lifelong readers.
