Storytelling Through Art and Literacy

My students need books about Gordon Parks and disposable cameras to practice being storytelling photographers!

My Students

My second graders come from all over the world. They each bring their own unique talents and experiences to the classroom and are incredibly excited about learning.

They are full of energy and enthusiasm and are beginning to come together to support one another!

They are passionate and love learning! As we read stories, they are constantly examining the illustrations and making observations that they are eager to share with one another. They are always asking questions, wondering why things work the way they do, or how things come about. They love working together with one another and encouraging each other to become leaders!

My Project

Throughout February our class will be working on different modes of storytelling. We will take deep dives into writing stories, taking pictures, publishing videos and creating art to share our own unique messages with others!

This specific element of the project will teach them about Gordon Parks, a photographer from the mid to late 1900's, who used his camera to tell the world about the differences in black and white America.

After learning about Gordon Parks, students will each get their own disposable camera to take home so they can start capturing their world! We will then get the photos printed, and students will create an album, book or article to share a message about their lives with others!
