Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in an urban neighborhood made up mostly of apartments, outside of downtown Los Angeles. The school is public, Title I, and serves kindergarten through eighth grade. My students are bright, energetic, and inquisitive learners. Reading, art, and physical education are some of their favorite subjects. They are all of the Hispanic descent and many speak Spanish at home with their families. I try to give the students opportunities and experiences so they can see possibilities for their futures.

My Project

Math concepts such as telling time and place value are difficult for young students. I find that the best way to introduce these concepts to students is to read a story that explains the concept. Students love stories and when they see what they are learning in math played out within a story, it helps them understand the concept.

I am requesting a series of storytelling math books by award winning authors like Grace Lin in English and Spanish.

These books with diverse characters introduce math in a fun way.
