Story-Telling : Can You See What I See?

My Students

Bright minds seem to surround me as I get to know each of my students. Through the thick and thin of COVID adaptation to their learning, they have been resilient and patiently accepted masks, social distancing and other limits that we have been given. As they have received limits and boundaries they have to accept, they have found new ways to learn and grow. The internet is a great resource but can sometimes hinder their learning.

It's time for us to give them stories and adventures, keeping screens out of the mix.

One of my favorite parts of being a foreign language teacher is becoming a story-teller. My students will quiet down and listen to the many stories I tell them, yearning to hear more about countries they have never seen and some cases will never see. I tell them about the sights, smells, sensations and I can somehow transport them far far away with me in that small moment. As I devoured stories throughout my childhood, I am determined to give the same feast to my students.

My Project

My favorite part of teaching is story-telling. Stories is what makes learning worth-while. As I convey the lesson through a tale, the emotions my students are feeling while listening are essential to their learning. My classroom no longer remains a dull center of cramming information into their brains. We travel together and they open their minds for new concepts and emotional connections.

This is why I created the Lunii story-teller project.

These ingenious story-tellers can give each student the experience of listening to stories in French and making choices along the way. It is an experience similar to "Choose your own Adventure" but as an auditive experience. They listen to the choices they are given and choose which direction they want to go in the story. This machine is ingenious and has no distracting screen, just a few dials to hear their options and select their preference. I love the feature where I can create my own stories and record them, so my students will have directly the Utah Core Standards fed to them... whilst having fun! Please give us the opportunity to hear more stories so they too will start telling their own.

The boxes are rechargeable and need head-phones to work privately. I have added a request for a shelf to store them, so my students can easily access them whenever they need them. I am so excited for all of these new possibilities!
