Storing All the Stuff!

My students need shelving to store their materials! I am reorganizing my classroom to focus on flexible and modular seating, but without desks, my students need a place to store everything!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to explore and are very curious. This year we are going to continue exploring ways that they can do their best learning. We are going to explore flexible seating and personalized learning so that each student can persevere and excel this year. My students' abilities range widely, but I want to be able to provide an inclusive environment that adapts to each student's needs.

My school is located in the inner city.

There are about 1,200 students in grade PreK-5. Most of my students live in low-income households. Many of my students are starting out the year below grade level, and we will be working on ways to improve their reading skills and comprehension. Our school is overcrowded, and my students will have to spend almost the whole day in our classroom. They will have to find new ways to learn and concentrate on their work independently. However, they are all eager and excited to learn, especially when when it comes to choosing their own learning.

My Project

My classroom has had old and rickety shelving for a long time. I would love to finally have a wall of shelving for my students to access all of their supplies more easily. With this shelving, all materials would be at their level and they would be able to reach everything easily. This would help my students to be more independent and self-reliant.

Most of the materials we use are out of my students' reach, and these shelves would help them to reach everything more easily.

I want my students to be used to helping themselves to any materials they need. If they use these shelves in our room, they would be able to reach and use all of their materials without my help. This would help me be able to focus on teaching small groups while other students work independently, and it would help other students stay focused on their own work and not get distracted by others.

My students this year have not been exposed to personalized learning or flexible seating, so they do not have the experience with relying on themselves to get their work done. They will excel in this practice, though, with the right support. Easily accessible materials will be one way to help support them. With the right help and right materials, my students will grow leaps and bounds throughout the year and be more than ready for the work in the years ahead!
