My students need novels that they can relate to for an end of the year reading unit! They need 22 copies of "Flipped" and 12 copies of "The Outsiders."

My Students

There is nothing more frustrating to an English teacher than hearing "I hate reading!" from one of his or her students. Therefore I try hard to find articles, poetry, and novels that my students will relate to and maybe even enjoy.

I teach English in a middle school ELL classroom at a Title I School in Hawaii.

My students range in reading levels from first grade to seventh grade. It is extremely difficult to cater to all the needs of my students but I have found that one thing that brings them together and inspires them to learn is providing them with material in the classroom that is both interesting and relevant to them.

My Project

At the end of the school year we always do a full-length novel reading unit. I try to find novels that are both appropriate and relevant for my students. For my 7th grade students I am requesting the novel "Flipped" which deals with relationships and bullying. For my 8th graders I am requesting copies of "The Outsiders" which deals with issues of class differences and coming of age. Both of these novels contain characters and concepts that my students can relate to, which I hope will inspire them to read.

Hopefully by reading these novels my students will see that reading can be fun and they will be inspired to find other books that interest them.

Plus, they will be learning along the way and they won't even know it!
