My Students

Although many of my students have spent their entire lives (well all 9 years of them) living in the same city, they know very little about what makes the city they call home so special.

My students face the challenges that many inner city children across our country fight to overcome everyday.

Despite the challenges they face they come to school eager for knowledge. Given the opportunity the students in my classroom can and do excel. In order to help the students in my classroom excel I do my best to bring the classroom to life. All of my students love to listen to and read stories. There is nothing more exciting than seeing twenty 9 year olds on the edge of their seats wanting to know what happens next.

My Project

The books I am requesting for my students will bring social studies and the city my students live in to life. Unfortunately, many of my students rarely get to adventure further than the neighborhood they live in. I hope these books can create a vivid picture of the rest "Aunt Flossie's Hats" will help my students go back in time and discover what their city was like years ago. Aunt Flossie's stories about the city's history will captivate my students. "The Flag Maker" will give my students the opportunity to experience what it was like to be a 13 year old girl helping with creation of the flag that inspired the "Star Spangled Banner." It is a story that will demonstrate how a symbol alone can bring people together and inspire courage and hope. They won't be able to believe that something that important happened in their city. "Perry's Adventure" will take my students on a bird's eye view tour of their city. After reading the story I would like to take my students on a city adventure.

In a time where standardized tests force teachers to focus on reading and math, my students are getting shortchanged when it comes to social studies.

I am a firm believer that students need social studies to become active citizens later in life. With the books I am requesting I would be able to incorporate social studies and reading. Before my students are ready to learn about their state, country, and world, they must first learn about their city. I know my students will love these stories!
