This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teaching and learning this digital age is challenging at best! Getting students engaged in the writing process by using technology is one of the best ways I have found to keep them focused on the task at hand, keep the creative juices flowing and teach literacy skills in a fun and exciting way.
My students are natural born scientists, and are always asking questions.
I teach at a small Title 1 school, approximately 350 students, with an amazing and supportive principal. My students are eager to learn and their brains are sponges that absorb any and all information given to them. Everything is a potential investigation/experiment to them so I strive to provide my students with as many learning and project based opportunities as possible. I enhance the school curriculum and students' intrinsic motivation to learn more by infusing STEM correlations whenever possible. Because of our size, funding levels are not as high as other schools that have larger enrollments. With the help of parent volunteers and other sources, our school thrives and student achievement is high. I truly believe that the future lies in our children, that they have virtually unlimited potential, and my job is to enable them to reach it.
My Project
The use of technology in the classroom is changing the way teachers teach and the way students learn. In my classroom my goal is to provide students with as many technological opportunities as I can to enhance student learning and to bridge the digital divide. We have a small number of computers and iPads, where students are encouraged to create and explore. A major part of the curriculum is creative and expository writing. Students are writing stories and learning to use the computer as a writing tool. Sometimes students' stories get "lost" or accidentally deleted from the desktop. Providing each student with their own flash drive to save and store their work will help to avoid those "accidents" and allow students to have ownership of their creations. They will be able to take their electronic work home to work on and share with their families. In addition, students will be creating an electronic portfolio of the work they have created and published throughout the school year.
The flash drives will be a tremendous tool as they learn to use and navigate technology.
In addition, students will have access to all of their work on any computer in the school and at home. This project will make a huge difference in my classroom and will encourage students to create and publish stories and reports.
