My project needs a listening center and a storage unit for the center so my students will be able to easily access the equipment, ensuring it stays in good condition.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege and honor of working with a bright and intelligent group of seventh graders. These students attend a great school which focuses on building a community. Each of the students learns how to find a voice and how their voice not only fits into their community but also how they can change it for the better.
As a literacy teacher for these students, my goal is to make sure I provide them with the best education possible. The curriculum which we have created does not only teach them the essentials they need to learn, but is structured around helping these students better themselves. The literature is something they can relate to and is interesting to read.
However, for some of them reading does not come easy. I have learned that some students need to hear the text, not just read it, especially our English Language Learners. For them, it is extremely beneficial for them to listen to the texts and read along.
In order to help not only our English Language Learners become better readers, but to also give all of the students the opportunity to hear a book become alive I am requesting a listening center for my students.
I myself have learned about the power of a listening center. I did not realize how much more a book could come alive until I started to listen to books on tape. When someone else reads a book to you, you can lose yourself in the text. It is almost as if the characters are acting out the words right in front of you.
Many of my students have never been read to. Even though I will do a lot of reading to them, a listening center will provide them with variety which is important for every learner.
I appreciate you considering this project and hope you will help my students by empowering them to listen as they read. I am always amazed how something as simple as a CD and a set of headphones can really impact a student. I know that a listening center and storage center will be more then just an impact on my students; it will be a lifelong learning experience for them.
