My Students

My students are always on the go. They are active and are definitely poster children for kids who need hands-on learning. We are constantly doing labs, and when we went to complete our "Calculate Your Speed" Lab, we discovered that all of our stopwatches were dead!

I am a teacher at a Title I middle school school with ninety amazing students.

They are young, eager, and always on the move. We are a school that focuses on growing our students, and I have been successful at that. My students will all say that they haven't had a science class like mine before this. We no longer watch a video and fill in a worksheet. We no longer copy vocabulary from a book and call that learning. We are experiencing science and creating deeper understanding of the subject itself. We are learning that science is a great career field, and we focus on preparing our students for the real world, outside of our small walls.

My Project

We do many labs that require us to be able to time ourselves. For example, during our Human Body Unit, we calculated our heart rates after doing various activities, multiplying our count by four after fifteen seconds. When we began our unit on motion, we calculated our speed during different activities by dividing distance by the time in seconds. When students can time themselves, they can work at their own pace, rather than have to keep up with the entire class. Some students need more time, and with individual stopwatches, they are allowed that.

As stated before, my students are constantly moving.

The labs I use stopwatches for are labs that get my students up and moving. They can calculate their own speed or heart rates. In doing so, they learn the concept of speed and how your heart rate and breathing rate increase together. These are important concepts that they learned on their own, not while a teacher was standing in front of a board having them copy notes.
