Help me give my students handwriting books, Play-Doh, crayons, and scissors for individual OT kits that can be sent home for remote learning or used to reduce shared materials if we are participating in in-person learning this fall!
Do you remember how proud you were when you first learned how to write, cut out a project, or tie your own shoes? For my kids, these tasks can seem incredibly difficult. Occupational Therapy helps them build the foundations they need to master these skills in order for them to succeed in school.
I provide support to students with disabilities to perform their best in their academic environments, meaning anything from the classroom to the cafeteria or recess!
Many of my students have Autism, learning disabilities, or other developmental delays that make learning in a typical classroom difficult. Our school has both integrated NEST program classrooms as well as gifted and talented classrooms and general education classrooms.
My Project
As we prepare to enter the 2020/2021 school year, we are faced with new challenges and uncertainties due to the continued global COVID-19 pandemic. We are not sure if we will be embarking on a new adventure of "Blended Learning" split between remote and in-person instruction, or if we will continue 100% remote learning come September. No matter which direction we go, providing a safe environment for my students to learn is of the highest importance.
I am creating individual OT Supply Packs for each of my students in order to keep them safe AND give them what they need to reach their goals.
If we are pursuing a blended learning model, I will be treating students in person and each student will have a sealed bag of supplies in my room labeled with their name. This will allow me to decrease the amount of shared supplies and prevent cross-contamination throughout the day. If we are going 100% remote, I will be able to send these packages home to each student so that they have fun and engaging tools to use during our tele-therapy OT sessions. Many of my students do not have the means to purchase expensive supplies such as specialized scissors, fine motor toys, and adaptive paper and workbooks. By sending these supplies home, I will be able to better recreate my in-person therapy sessions virtually.
