This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are in a small 6th-12th grade school in New York. My students, due to a variety of reasons, have been deprived of inquiry-based science education for many years. As their 6th grade teacher, I see where learning empathy and friendships are a struggle. I am looking for ways to rectify this sad truth.
As their science teacher, I am also trying to give students a science, technology, engineering, and math experience that could change their lives and improve their mindset when they think about science.
Some of my students haven't had science since 4th grade. True education doesn't just focus on math and English. Science changes the world!!
My Project
These snacks will make a major difference in my classroom by allowing me to meet a need many of my students deal with. Hunger! When students come to my classroom not having eaten this causes them to not be focused in class.
Hunger is the hidden elephant in the room.
Having these snacks available would be a great help in addressing this issue without having to make a student feel like they are alone. If I have snacks available I will be able to feed hungry students without the stigma of having to go to the lunchroom or the nurse to get a snack. Since all students will have access to the snack, it could also act as a motivational tool in my classroom.
