My Students

All of my students are currently in the hospital as a result of illness or injury. They are attending school bedside while receiving medical care and various treatments. The students are often distracted from learning because of pain, medication, sadness and anger. The children in my class are from New York and the surrounding areas. We also accept and treat children from other states and from out of this county.

My students 4 to 21 years of age are currently hospitalized for a variety of childhood diseases and accidents.

They receive medical and educational intervention daily while in the hospital. It is the goal to reunite students with their friends, families and home district school classmates. My kids are diagnosed with diabetes, physical delays, cognitive and social delays as a result of accidents and illness. Students have a wide range of challenges which are a result of current illness and new life altering diagnosis.

I work for NYC DOE Hospital Schools which supports teachers in 38 NYC Hospitals. My students are warriors and they fight the fight every day pushing past the pain. My students are often newly diagnosed with life threatening diseases such as diabetes and seizure disorders.

My Project

Children are being diagnosed with diabetes at an alarming rate. I will use books, art, math and science as tools to teach children diagnosed with diabetes to live safe, healthy lives in school. Children will be taught to understand basic math to help them monitor their insulin numbers. Health and nutrition will be through planting seeds and using art supplies to create pictures of healthy food choices. Children will create their own books personalized with their own medical diagnosis.

Diabetes is a disease that can be managed with education, nutritional awareness, exercise and loving support.

Grade appropriate books on diabetes, art supplies, and hands-on interactive learning activities will allow students to properly learn about healthy eating and self care for diabetes. We need to discharge students safe for school.

Diabetes is a disease that affects the whole family, especially when a child is diagnosed. Every student in the hospital will be taught the benefits of healthy food choices, exercise and education. Students will learn about their disease making connections between the books main character and themselves. Children will be encouraged to express themselves. The printer ink will be used to copy all resource materials so all students can return home with comprehensive materials to be used for further reference. All supplies and materials will be shared between students in 3 hospitals.
