My Students

My creative and resourceful visual arts students live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. My middle schoolers come from many backgrounds and bring with them interests and artistic styles just as diverse. From photorealism and anime to sculpture, students tackle all sorts of projects with open minds and a willingness to experiment. Even in all the upheaval of Covid, they use their creativity and perseverance to make and share art.

Something I appreciate about my art students is how kind, accepting and respectful they are of one another.

Since students willingly pitch in to help a tablemate clean up a paint spill or make constructive suggestions about each other's projects, everyone can feel supported and free to try new techniques. As a result, these students produce work for 4 or 5 community art shows a year as well as keeping a portfolio to appreciate their own progress with skills.

My Project

I teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced art classes as well as yearbook. Students in all my sections do at least one digital art project each year. These digital cameras will especially help small groups of my advanced artists plan, design sets, film, edit, and publish their original stop motion animation shorts. This 8th grade culminating art project requires students to apply English language arts, technology, and art skills. Some students choose to use drawing, paper, clay, a combination, or other media to produce their shorts. Students help design a rubric for final project evaluation to guide one another through the process and offer constructive criticism during screenings. Final projects are published on our class YouTube channel and other teachers at our school screen them for their homerooms.
