My students are a diverse group of learners at a Title I school just north of Chicago. They are creative and energetic, but many also experience learning struggles in core classroom subjects. This is why they look forward to Media Arts as a class that they can be innovative and successful using creative media!
My students love project-based learning, especially projects that let them creatively explore, express themselves, and tell stories using their imaginations, inspiration from artists, and experiences from their own lives.
Because some students are remote and some are hybrid, students are working on their iPads to create meaningful projects and share them virtually with their classmates.
My Project
Students are so engaged when they can tell their stories using hands-on, creative methods. Using the legos, characters, and clay from this project, students will create their own stop motion animation stories in Stop Motion Studio, then record and add sound effects and titles in iMovie to complete their videos.
Students will learn the exciting process of stop motion animation, while sharing stories that ignite their imagination and allow them to develop characters, plot, setting, and dialogue.
This project has always been a favorite of my 6th graders in class. In non-Covid times students are in a classroom working together and sharing materials. However, with remote and hybrid learning and social distancing practices, we've had to rethink distribution of materials. Because students in person are in different classrooms all over the school zooming into my class, I need to have separate clay and lego packs that I can distribute to them so they can create their projects. This project will also allow me to deliver materials to students who need them at home.
