My Students
Do you remember the sound of a beloved adult in your life saying the words "Once upon a time" to you as a child? I do! That is something too many of my students have never experienced. They need to hear great examples of books and stories read to them daily.
My students are children that come from economically challenged homes.
Our school has over 85% free and reduced lunch status and we are a Title 1 school. My kindergarten students come to school every day and enter a world that they can only be part of for the hours they are there. Many have no books to read at home and only hear the magic of a good story for the first time in my classroom. A large majority of them come to school lacking the oral language skills to be successful. Hearing stories read aloud to them drastically improve their abilities to become readers themselves and learn to love reading for a lifetime!
My Project
By having these listening center materials my students can hear amazing stories read aloud to them every day. They can choose stories or songs based on their interest. They can mimic fluent reading by copying the voices in their ears and make a connection between written words and oral language. For just a few minutes of every day they can concentrate on the joy of reading and forget the worries many of them face at a far too early age. While they are listening to these stories, poems and songs they can be learning and enjoying life! These experiences will hopefully open the door for many of those students struggling with reading and give them an opportunity to become lifelong readers.
