Stop KNITTING And Go To Bed!

My students need knitting needles and yarn to learn the craft of knitting for gifts and charity.

My Students

Children enjoy the simple pleasure of knitting. Men and women throughout the ages have found this to be true. Introducing this craft at such a young age is a thrill for teacher and student alike.

We are a middle school that includes grades 5 - 8.

We are one of three middle schools that feed into a large high school. This is a suburban area and students come from all backgrounds. Teachers work very hard to connect with students, create a supportive environment, and make learning fun. Many of our students are active in in-school groups and out-of-school activities. A core group of students are not involved in sports or other activities. They need a way to feel involved and a part of school. Knitting crafts fit the bill perfectly.

My Project

Many parents have told me that they've caught their children knitting under the covers at night when they should be sleeping! Students are allowed to knit during their Advisory class as well as free time after lessons or after testing. Students get such a sense of satisfaction at the completion of a project that they just beam with pride! The only thing that stops students from this feeling of accomplishment is lack of supplies. My hope is to put a pair knitting needles, a colorful skein of yarn, and a crochet hook in the hands of each 6th grade student who shows interest. As their skills improve, the plan is to make baby caps to donate to a local hospital, which fits into our school theme for this year: "Kindness Counts". The final goal is for each student to "will" their needles to the next class along with a short journal of what they have accomplished with those needles. Hopefully parents will support the craft and students will continue on with their own supplies.

Many students express interest in learning to knit.

Typically they don't have the money for the basic supplies. Their parents are either unable or unwilling to buy the materials. I have found that the few students who do participate take pride in their skill. Typically, their test scores improve as well as their general attitude about school. Your donation will reach those students who are looking for a way to belong in their challenging middle school years. School involvement is key to success.
