My Students

What if you could tell a story without ever lifting a pen? The art of sharing a story can be shown in many ways, yet in school, students generally have one way of showing what they know: pencil and paper. With movie-making, they now have multiple ways of showcasing what they have learned.

The students at our elementary come form many places.

Las Vegas is know as the 5th largest school district in the country but what really sets it apart is its high transiency rate. Families at the moment are pouring into Vegas for the job opportunities, yet just a few years ago they were leaving in droves as the jobs dried up. This ebb and flow of children into our schools presents some difficult opportunities for our teachers to catch up our students on skills and learning missed while in transit. With our school 80% or more English Language Learners with 95% Free-and-Reduced Lunch, we have a huge challenge as teachers on our hands. Some of our kids seasonally travel out of the country for weeks sometimes. When they come back into Vegas, they have missed many instructional days, leaving them further and further behind their peers. The more they fall behind, the weaker the motivation is to work hard and learn-especially when the learning is not too exciting.

My Project

These kids need innovation, creativity and lessons that transcend language barriers. Having the right tools can make all the difference. This is where film making and a before school club comes in. Last year I started a Media Club for grades 3-5 before school. It was a hit! Using movie editing software, the kids in the club created amazing Public Service Announcements for our daily morning show. They even tried to created stop-film animation on their own with limited success. This year we want to do it right. With the six Hue Animation cameras and software, along with hands on building materials, these students will go well beyond last years attempts. This form of storytelling is multifaceted. These kids will need to find their message, write a concise script, plan the production, have the patience to film and edit, and finally present their work on a school-wide platform. For the students in this high poverty, at-risk neighborhood, they are able to apply real world skills.

The kids that will be using these animation tools and materials are the struggling readers and writers who simply need a different way of showing what they know and what they can do.

Many of the Media Club kids gained confidence by simply making a mini movie for their classmates to enjoy. This helped them in the day-to-day learning within their classrooms as the brought, used, and shared strategies for storytelling. We want to keep this motivation momentum going with this new school year!
