This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the pleasure of teaching 20 second graders. Many of my students are English Language Learners who are struggling to learn English.
I am trying to create a classroom library of books on tape to better serve the needs and learning styles of my students. There is nothing more heartbreaking than seeing a child who wants to read a book, but knows he or she cannot even read the texts. Most families speak their native language at home, so often times the students don't have someone to read a book with them.
By having a wide variety of books on tape, the children can read and listen to a variety of literature at school and home which will help to increase their word knowledge and fluency.
Imagine going to school every day and speaking English all day long. Then, imagine going home with a homework assignment of reading 20 minutes. Your parents don't speak the English language, your sister or brother who does speak the language doesn't have time to sit down and read with you, but you have to read because it is part of your homework assignment, even if you don't know all of the words.
Purchasing books on tape for the children to listen to at school as well as take home to complete there daily homework assignments will instantly provide my students with the support to help them learn the language. They won't have to worry about someone not understanding English and not having the support at home to help them figure out a word. They can read and listen to a book on tape several times until they begin to be more fluent and understand what they are reading.
Your help will ensure my students a chance to experience great literature and the enjoyment of reading a good book.
