it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a third grade teacher at a Title I inner city public school that is a part of a low income/high poverty school district. A full 100% of the students at my school are economically disadvantaged. My class includes 32 diverse students whose learning styles and abilities vary greatly. It is a challenge to find resources within a financially struggling school district to ensure positive, academic development for all of my students.
Attending school in an underfunded school district combined with living in poverty exacerbates obstacles to learning for my students.
These circumstances are beyond their control. Despite their struggles, they come to school every day excited to be there and ready to learn. They are all creative and curious, and they demonstrate persistence regularly. Seeing them work so hard each day motivates me to seek out the best opportunities for them to achieve academic success.
My Project
My students need stools to sit on in various spots in our classroom such as the guided reading table and our computer center. Currently, there are barely enough chairs for my students to sit on at their desks. When students work at the guided reading table or computer center, they have to bring their chair with them. Our classroom is overcrowded, and it is a struggle for them to carry their chairs through the rows of desks and students. Stools would also be convenient for my special education students. They leave the classroom for a period each day to work with a instructional assistant, and they have to carry their chairs out with them. I would love for them to have their own stools out in the hallway to use each day. This would be so much easier for them rather than having to carry a heavy chair back and forth.
As a teacher to 32 students of different learning levels, it can be a struggle to meet the needs of all learners in my classroom.
In order to ensure I am helping and challenging all of my students, I try to meet with them in small groups based on their learning levels to work with them daily. We need flash cards, Multiplication Wrap-ups and dice to make learning math fun. My students enjoy the chance to work with me more directly. A lot of them have told me it is their favorite time of the day. However, the transition students have to make with their chairs to and from me is very chaotic and distracting to other students. It is also taking away from learning. Having permanent stools at our guided reading table will help transitions run seamlessly and give us more time together!
