Stolen School Garden Supplies Needed to be Restocked

My students need gardening tools and seeds for our edible school garden. A recent robbery occurred and most all of our garden supplies were stolen. We need new supplies

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kids love the garden. They work in, plant, dig, learn, explore, harvest, eat and relax in it nearly every school day. Nutrition, composting, science and the environment are themes taught and reinforced in the garden. Keeping it sustainable is difficult, especially since our supplies were stolen.

The Garden is an important component of our educational environment.

We are located in a socially and economically disadvantaged neighborhood in Richmond, CA and the garden provides opportunity for exploration and education that students may otherwise not experience. Our school is 100% free school lunch, and is made up of 100% minority populations. Despite our disadvantages we have made tremendous strides in improving our test scores and the social and emotional environment. We have served as a model school for system wide programs and interventions and rank among the top in the district on state testing. Kids love the garden, we need help to restock it and keep seasonal fruits, herbs and vegetables growing. Our school is pre-K-6th grade serving regular and special education students. We value diversity in our students and in our education through such programs as music, physical education, and the garden. Please help us overcome our challenges faced by the recent break-in.

My Project

Students visit the garden daily during lunch and recess with supervised exploration or work in the garden. Additionally, a scholar of the week program is in place where weekly winners visit the garden to harvest, plant, or conduct lessons on science, the environment, or nutrition. The materials requested are essential for the sustainability for the garden. Students will use these supplies directly in the garden. Without the resources requested the garden will be difficult to maintain. Students will use the gloves, shovels, sheers, seeds in an interactive fashion to learn gardening best practices, organic farming, composting, ecosystems, and the environment. They will be able to dig, plant, weed, prune, harvest, and keep their hands safe while doing so. They will help make the garden beautiful and functional. They eat healthy herbs and vegetables. The Peres Scholar Garden is a fun, interactive, "classroom" that reaches students of all learning styles. Kids love it!

This garden project has made a difference in our students lives.

Exploring in the garden, eating fresh peas, smelling fresh herbs, watching the ecosystems interact, witnessing life grow and interact right in front of them are life lessons and experiences that many will never forget. It will teach and reinforce healthy lifestyles and critical environmentally sustainable practices. Without these donations we have limited resources to keep the garden alive.
