My Students

I teach at a large Illinois inner city elementary school. The school is predominately African American. I teach 6th grade social studies, science, reading, writing and math. My students are from low income families and are all eligible for free lunch.

I would like to embark on a project that teaches financial literacy.

A large proportion of adults are not financially-literate. I believe that to truly be a financially-literate adult one has to begin learning the ins and outs of financial literacy in childhood. With predatory lenders, get rich quick schemes and confidence scams, people really need to know how to grow and protect their assets. The Stock Market Game is an online program used in thousands of classrooms nationwide to help teach core subjects like math, social studies, technology, business, economics and language skills in a real-world application while emphasizing the importance of long-term saving and investing. I want my students to compete in a virtual stock market game sponsored by Northern Illinois University.

My Project

My students will work in teams to manage and grow a virtual $10,000 investment portfolio. In order to build their portfolios, students research and evaluate stocks, bonds and mutual funds and make decisions based upon their learning. To understand a stock or its overall market performance, I will teach my students how the economy works. My students will also compete with other students from schools in the state. The goal is to make the most valuable investments by the end of the school year. With this program, I will be able to teach my students life skills as well as how the financial industry works. My students will use the Notebook Computers to check their stock portfolio daily, research company performance, and compare stocks (cost per share, current trading price, historical data) in order to make the best investment choices. Students will also be able to provide reports on various corporations to me justifying their choice to buy or sell stocks.

My students and I would be very grateful if you are able to invest in their "stock portfolios." With your generosity, my students can get a financial education that will last a lifetime.

My students need 2 HP Notebook Computers, 2 protection plans, 2 wireless mice, and 2 protective carrying cases to help build financial literacy.
