Stocking the Shelves With Books for Everyone

My students need diverse books that will inspire them to be empathetic, to relate to the struggles of others, and to make their community and the world a better place.

My Students

Being a teenager means deciding who you want to be and where you want to attend college, all while trying to fit in, participate in extra curriculars, work part time, and make good grades. It can be stressful. This is why choice reading is so important in the classroom. Giving students choice in what they read makes them take ownership. They then can enjoy the stress relief provided by a diverse book that will also inspire empathy and change. My students want to change the world and better their community, but they need inspiration from beautiful stories to see how.

My Project

My name is Carrie Rice and I’m an English teacher at Charles Henderson High School. I believe wholeheartedly in the power of reading and its ability to transform lives and communities.

This fall, my students and I will join Project LIT Community to increase access to high-quality, culturally relevant books inside and outside of the classroom, and to promote a love of reading in Troy, Alabama.

I have partnered with dedicated teachers and students in more than 50 schools around the country to ensure that all children become proficient, passionate readers who possess the literacy skills to choose their post-secondary path.

This year, we plan to host monthly #CHHSReads Project LIT Book Clubs in our school in order to bring students, parents, and community members together to discuss and celebrate outstanding literature. We would love for you and the entire community to join us at these events!

Additionally, throughout the year, our students will engage in meaningful service & project-based learning focused on literacy, which will allow them to gain critical 21st century skills while becoming better citizens, leaders and readers.

Please let me know if you’d like to learn more about Project LIT Community and how you can support our work.

Thanks, and happy reading!
