My Students
My students motivate me each and every day. They are thoughtful, strong, funny, insightful, kind, driven young people who push me each and every day to be a better teacher and a more socially conscious individual. They demand so much from me, as I do from them.
My students face a variety of challenges--they attend school in an underfunded district, in a city plagued by segregated violence, run by individuals who fail to acknowledge the link between the two.
Despite the shortcomings of many of the politicians and leaders around them, my students come to school each and every day with an eye toward the future. They work hard to do their best, overcoming obstacles no child should face as hurdles to education, shaping themselves to be the change-makers we need in our workplaces and public institutions.
My Project
This project includes a variety of things that will make our classroom more dynamic. The lectern will provide my students with a more professional tool to deliver their presentations, solutions, and speeches. The ink is not all that exciting, but essential to be able to produce vibrant materials for my students to view. We spend a lot of time analyzing charts, graphs, and other visuals to better understand our world, and seeing these in color makes all the difference! The flip charts and markers are great for making students' thinking visible to their peers, making the exchange easier while also helping students to develop their written and verbal communication. Finally, the document camera is a practical tool for the classroom to allow students to display their work, to make their thinking while reading more visible, and to make our analysis more readily focused on what students are doing rather than what I am doing as the teacher.
None of these materials are particularly flashy, but they are foundational to the functioning of a classroom where students can grapple with big ideas and make thinking and learning visible to their peers.
