This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Stitch by Stitch, Making a Difference is a creative and meaningful service-learning project completed in our classroom. Students bring their imaginations to life by designing and sewing a monster of their choice. They begin by sketching a pattern, cutting out each piece, and carefully selecting felt, buttons, and other details to give their monster its own unique personality. With patience and skill, students hand-sew their creations from start to finish.

Once the monsters are complete, students write a thoughtful letter to accompany their project.

The finished “felt friends” are then gifted to elementary students in our district, where they find a second life as desk pets—a fun and comforting companion during the school day.

This project not only strengthens important skills like creativity, design, problem-solving, and sewing, but also teaches empathy, responsibility, and the joy of giving back. It is a wonderful way for students to connect classroom learning with real-world impact, one stitch at a time.
