My students need some basic supplies to keep their instruments in optimum working condition. We are requesting a new case, oil, French horn string among other materials.
Imagine learning and practicing on an instrument that has a funky odor! This is reality for many of my students who use old, school-provided instruments. I am asking for some basic supplies to help clean and maintain our aging inventory.
At the far end of a drab, lonely basement hallway, there lives a unique community of student musicians.
The small room is filled with frenetic energy and the sounds of learning. More than 200 students enter the room each day in pursuit of learning a musical instrument. We are a large middle school in an urban area. Our student body is wonderfully diverse. The band students have amazing energy and passion for music. Although most of the children have never played a band instrument prior to seventh grade, they easily rival the suburban schools by the end of grade eight. Our band recently received a gold with distinction rating at our State Adjudication Festival. Through their effort and determination, my students inspire me to be a better teacher.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting will help maintain the instruments and protect the children from germs. Our instruments are old and in need of constant care. The various lubricants and greases will help keep the instruments in optimum condition. The large and small bore Quick Horn Rinse Kits will be used to clean out all of the brass instruments. The felts will replace the deteriorating ones in many of our brass instruments. The swabs will be used to clean out the clarinets and saxophones. The crown corks will be used to replace old ones inside the flutes, so that the instruments will play more in tune. The new trombone case will replace a badly broken one and the new drumsticks will allow me to throw out the old, splintered ones. This project will help our instruments last a long time, so they will be there for future generations of band students.
The vast majority of my students cannot afford to rent or purchase an instrument of their own.
It is my mission to never turn a child away from band, so it is my duty to maintain our aging inventory. Funding this project will help me clean, fix and maintain our instruments so that more lives can be touched by the transcendent power of music!
