Stimulating Problem Solving for Gifted Primary Students

Help me give my students projects and games to help them reason, think, and problem solve.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Dieckman's classroom raised $590

My Students

My gifted and talented students are very diverse coming from many different racial and ethnic backgrounds. My students range in ages from 5-9. Our gifted program serves a large geographic area with students attending from 22 elementary schools located across Kansas City. My gifted primary students excel in their ability to think, reason and judge, making it necessary for them to receive special educational services and support to be able to fully develop their potential and talents. Are you willing to support the gifts and talents my students posses?

My Project

Giftedness, particularly in the early grades, “manifests itself as potential and needs to be stimulated.” To satiate the curiosity of gifted children and develop their strengths, teachers need to provide gifted students with opportunities to problem solve and think critically. These tools and games I am requesting will provide my primary gifted students those opportunities to problem solve and think critically which is something they don't always get in their regular education classroom. These tools and games will require my primary gifted students to employ troubleshooting-like problem solving skills (e.g., pattern recognition, problem decomposition, data modeling, problem identification, conceptualization) while also developing invaluable social-emotional skills (e.g., self-efficacy, tolerance for ambiguity, communication, adaptability).

My ultimate goal is for me to support the development of my gifted student's strengths by giving them the opportunity to engage in problem solving and employ critical thinking.

Critical thinking is an important skill for anyone to build because it helps people make better decisions in situations that do not have a clear answer. When children become better critical thinkers, they are more prepared to make better decisions in their personal or professional lives later on.
