Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have grit! Character. Spirit. Perseverance. Passion.
We live a sedentary life because everything is at our fingertips.
Often kids stay in to watch television, play video games, or watch videos on their portable devices. How do we change that culture? How do we motivate our children to go out and play sports?
I grew up in an improvished neighborhood and sports was what keep me out of trouble and active in a positive way. I'm hoping to do the same for my students.
My Project
Sports Matter!
Inspired by ESPN "wanting to help provide students with access to sports in schools across the country" I thought this project would be an excellent way to motivate my 5th graders who are getting Spring Fever and "Senioritis." With the acquisition of these sports supplies, I will be able to engage my students in a series of highly energized circuit training and obstacle course play.
Research has clearly demonstrated that having a healthy body is worth it's value in gold in terms of that translating to a healthy mind. Academia is extremely important but I also want to ensure the kids are keeping active all the time. In addition to our mandated physical education minutes, my students and I play games in our classroom not only help students with different learning modalities have access to the curriculum, but also because a "body that is in motion, stays in motion."
We will provide a venue for the students to let out all of their pent up energy on the blacktop. After engaging in a series of warm up exercises, the students will get into teams to crawl through tunnels, roll through cones, and participate in a series of relays using the potato sacks, three-legged bands, and the egg and spoon . We will begin with teacher created obstacle challenges starting with reading the book. As the students get acclimated with the materials and the intentions, they will then create their own circuit training exercises to strengthen their core and then create obstacle challenges for themselves and their classmates. Every single student will be active, engaged, and getting physically fit.
