FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. D.'s classroom raised $398
This project is fully funded
I am a Life Skills teacher at an elementary school(Pre-K through grade 4) and I have five students in my classroom. Students are placed in the Life Skills program because they have severe disabilities that keep them from being able to function independently in a general education classroom. There are two students in my class who have Autism which can cause many different types of sensory problems. Some people with Autism may not like to be touched at all, even a pat on the back and some may just not like certain textures. Sensory issues like this tend to be a problem for all of the students in my class but especially the ones with Autism.
Because of these sensory problems, a lot of our daily curriculum involves activities that incorporate beging able to tolerate touching many different kinds of textures. Some students work on being able to tolerate water running over their hands and others search for small "treasures" hidden in a bucket full of rice and beans. While these are worthwhile activities for my students, there are many other sensory stimulation products available that we are simply not able to purchase for our classroom due to a lack of resources. Many special needs students suffer from what we call "sensory deprivation" which can affect how well they are able to learn.
One of the items that I would like to have in my classroom is a Sensory Stimulation Activity Center. This is a battery powered center that can also be mounted to the wall, and students using this center can push a plate that vibrates or roll a wooden roller that makes music play, activate a fan or buzzer, or switch on a light. The kids like this type of center because they have many different choices. Even though they are aware of which of their senses may need stimulated they will find the one that suits their needs.
By having many different activities for the students to choose from, they learn to tolerate many different textures and experiences such as music or light that they will experience outside of the classroom. This will allow them one more area where they may be able to function more independently someday.
