Still Innovating With STEAM Tool Kits

My Students

Our rural elementary STEAM students in grades K-5 love visiting our STEAM class every week for 60 minutes. It is the perfect space for hands-on learning that integrates science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.

We start our class reconnecting with one another, learning about the day's challenge/activity and expectations, and participating in a conversation that aims to inspire teams.

Traditionally, once students have learned about the day's challenge, they form teams and start brainstorming solutions. Using materials available in our room they work through the Engineering Design Process to work out their solution. However, this year we will physically distance when working.

My Project

Physical distancing won't stop us from creating and innovating! With individual STEAM tool kits, my students in grades kindergarten - 5th grade, will have quick and safe access to the tools they most frequently use for a majority of the challenges and projects we create throughout the year.

Students will be equipped to create and problem-solve as each kit will house a variety of materials including a tape, scissors, and rulers.

The kits will be stored by class and ready to use the following week when they have STEAM again. The portability of the kits will allow us to use them when we visit our outdoor classrooms (school forest, pond, schoolyard garden, prairie, maple syrup tapping area, and nature center) for challenges involving our environment.
