My students need a classroom set of Stiff, our yearlong, supplementary reading for our class and tools for doing and learning excellent annotations. These materials will help us do that.
I teach in an urban school with a diverse student population. Our school includes gifted, advanced, honors, traditional, and occupational educational programs. Our students are both hearing and deaf. It could be said that our school truly encompasses every denomination of every category out there.
It may be said that our students are so special because they are so diverse.
I am proud to be a graduate of our incredible school, which only makes we want to work harder. Our population is made up of students who come from a truly diverse background; some parents work for FedEx and St Jude, and others are working 2-3 jobs just trying to keep everything together.
In our school we have students who work after school jobs and some who do not. Everything we do is about coming together as Spartans. That is something I am always proud of. It doesn't matter what the students are doing; they tend to come together well to support each other.
My Project
Currently, my students are reading Stiff by Mary Roach, as a supplemental text. Though they are enjoying the work, we do not have the supplies we need.
As part of a interconnected unit of study in Science, History, English, anatomy and physiology and character; we are using this book to address a multitude of topics.
My students have tried hard to rise to the challenge, but we just don't have all the supplies we need. That's where our donors can help us close the gap! I am excited to see their understandings grow as we continue in this unit of study. They have approached the concepts of death, dying and dissection with reverence and respect. I am encouraged to see them deeply engaged.
This project will provide me with a classroom set of books and materials to teach this book. We will use the ink for printing supplementary materials for all students as well as reading guides that the students are writing. The page flags and pens will be used to teach two different annotation techniques.
