My students are creative, thoughtful, high-energy learners. They learn best when they are engaged, hands-on, and thinking critically together. They greet me each morning with a smile and great energy to start the day. Each day is a challenge and we face it head on together.
My classroom is ran like a big family, where we depend on each other and stick together during hard times.
I have many low income students who face challenges academically as well as in their own lives. Those students still come to school and do their best, no matter what life is throwing their way. They teach me new things and motivate me each day.
Being in a town that has recovered from a huge tornado 11 years ago, makes me proud to see what our town and school district has done. We have made huge strides for our kids. My students now may not have been around during the tornado, but they see the spirit that our town and school have gained from being resilient. My hope is that they continue to be lifelong learners who have a creative drive and spirit to them.
My Project
My school has recently started using the Science of Reading to guide our reading instruction. Phonics is a key component of that daily reading instruction - especially in first grade. We have worked hard all year on phonics skills - blends, digraphs, long vowels, short vowels - you name it, we've worked on it! My students are eager to learn and need all the right materials to do so.
This project will give my hands-on students the manipulatives they need to really get those phonics skills to stick.
In my classroom, we focus on a different phonics skill each week and need new resources to implement those skills. The dominoes will give my students a fun hands-on experience with those skills. The whiteboards will be used in whole group activities where we write words with the phonics skill included and in small group activities during our reading group hour. The giant magnet page will be used to do whole class stories using decodable phonics skills.
My students are definitely hands-on learners and would love these resources as we continue our daily phonics instruction!
