Our rural elementary STEAM students in grades K-5 love visiting our STEAM class every week for 60 minutes. It is the perfect space for hands-on learning that integrates science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.
We start our class reconnecting with one another, learning about the day's challenge/activity and expectations, and participating in a conversation that aims to inspire teams.
Traditionally, once students have learned about the day's challenge, they form teams and start brainstorming solutions. Using materials available in our room they work through the Engineering Design Process to work out their solution. However, this year we will physically distance when working.
My Project
As elementary engineers, we're always on the hunt for a better way to manage some of the materials we use. We have a hard time cutting plastic recyclables. Our Canary Cutters and scissors are not safe, proper tools to use for the job.
After researching for better methods, we discovered that a Dremel tool would help with this task!
Adding a Dremel tool to our classroom would help us to safely work with plastic recyclables and also enable us to work with our 3D prints as well (sand, cut, engrave).
In addition to cutting, we use resources to help keep our projects together (tape and glue). The duct tape and glue sticks are materials we've found that work well for our projects. We go through a lot of hot glue gun sticks and tape, so these two materials would benefit all students in our classroom!
