Stick, Stands, Strings - time to Upgrade!

My students need marching band and concert band drum sticks, cello and bass bows, jazz band mutes, instrument cases and other basics for a successful music classroom.

My Students

What would it be like if the marching band played at the game, but there were no drumsticks? How about an orchestra concert with no bows for the cellos and basses? The equipment we have is wonderful, but it needs to be replaced periodically. We are at that point. Time to upgrade!

Our program is a four-year high school band and orchestra program that has been going strong for over one hundred years.

Our community is supportive of the arts, but that does not always translate into school funding. We have students in our program who are not able to afford some of the basic things they need to make music. Unfortunately, the school district is not able to provide enough funds in the budget to adequately cover all of our needs. I think these items should be provided since we are a publicly funded school. That is why donors to our program are so incredibly important.

My Project

I am requesting funds to purchase a large number of drumsticks which will last for many years. I have not purchased sticks for five years and this request will cover our needs for at least that long. Marching Band snare drummers are by nature hard on drumsticks. I am also requesting some instrument cases to replace worn out ones. The instruments are fine, but worn cases can cause damage over time. New bows for cellos and basses are a necessity since ours have been re-haired so many times they are not going to last much longer. Having extra strings on the shelf for violins and cellos is useful when they do break and need to be replaced. If I can do that immediately, then we do not lose valuable rehearsal time by sending the instrument to the repair shop. One of the most valuable things my students learn through this grant process is how many people in our country really support what they are doing. The arts bring so much joy to so many! This is not something my budget will allow me to do on a regular basis, so any help you may be able to offer would be greatly appreciated. These items are things student musicians need on a daily basis and many of them (instrument cases and bows) will last for many years.
