My Students

My students are English Language Learners in a poor neighborhood of a southern city. They are all from Latin American countries. Many have parents who are illiterate in Spanish and do not yet speak English, but all of their parents share a common goal: to provide their children with safety and education.

My immigrant students have the will and ability to be peaceful and creative leaders in their new country, the United States.

They share their parents' grit and bravery.

My Project

Students need these sticky notes to annotate the texts they choose for independent reading. Educational research says that summarizing while reading and independent reading are excellent strategies to improve students’ reading comprehension.

However, experience tells me that reluctant readers often fabricate summaries from texts they have not actually read.

They pretend they are doing their independent reading by writing a pretend summary on another page. The sticky notes will fix this problem, because students will place one sentence summaries directly under the text they are summarizing, allowing me, their teacher to verify that the summary actually reflects what they read.

Aside from providing accountability, the sticky notes create a feeling of professionalism among students. Students see teachers and administrators with books and manuals filled with sticky notes, Because of this, they often ask me to use my sticky notes, because these notes make them feel grown and important. Believe me, something as simple as a sticky note will increase students’ motivation to read. I have seen them, pencil and sticky notes in hand, pouring over a text, ready to talk back to it with their professional tool.
