Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am one of two teachers who run an 18-21 year old job transition program for students with disabilities. A PPT team decides if the student is appropriate for the program. There are 21 students in the class, with two teachers and 5 paraprofessionals. Some of the students have 2:1 paraprofessional support while others have general support.

Our job is to get the students ready for work out in the community.

Some students are ready to go out into the community right away, others have more involved disabilities and need more support. One thing we have noticed while traveling with our students is they have very little physical stamina. The program is in an inner-city school and while walking to the bus stop, many students struggle to walk just a few feet! While students are working at a job, whether it be volunteer or paid, within a short amount of time, they have to rest. This is something we feel we have to work on.

We talk about eating correctly in order to maintain stamina. We also have fitness time available to us every afternoon. We are continually working on trying to motivate the students to track their fitness.

My Project

Our program is called the STEP Program. Most of our students are living in inner-city, low-income conditions. Many parents, in order to keep their students safe, keep them inside, not allowing them to get outside to exercise. We see a need for the students to get into an exercise program in order for them to gain stamina. This would be extremely beneficial for them to get to their jobs as well as to maintain their energy at the job itself. The Steps to Fitness goal would be a five month incentive program in which the students would use their pedometers to track their step count. They would need to walk at least 5 miles a week, ending in a total of 80 miles by May 4. This leaves a few weeks to have students who are behind in their goal to catch up. The students who obtain their 80 mile goal will earn a trip to Lake Compounce.
